Skulls are fascinating subject matter and make for compelling compositions. Using candlelight presents the opportunity to employ chiaroscuro techniques using dramatic light and shadows.

Working from a still life composed of assorted animal skulls and skeletons and lit by candles we’ll experiment with different media to attempt tenebrism, a style of chiaroscuro that is dark, gloomy, and mysterious.

The workshop is a fun and sociable event as participants begin with a short sketch of the still life centered on a table. Drawers will then move to different places for successive sketches from several viewpoints. Each sketch introduces a new medium to work with and a longer working time. Finally choosing a favorite or preferred view, a longer drawing may be created with a preferred media.

Drawing by candlelight is a challenge and can raise fascinating results with chiaroscuro techniques of intense lighting and inky black backdrops.

All materials are supplied and include soft graphite pencils, graphite crayons, water soluble graphite and light pastels on dark paper.
